Neighbors say

Loved by Salem.

"Freed a double-hung window that had been painted shut since the 80s and re-rigged the sash weights. It actually opens now. Also patched plaster in the hallway in the same visit."
Allison V., Englewood, Salem
"Re-set three fence posts and added a tension cable along a long run. Gates latch perfectly and the panel hasn't moved in two windstorms. Honest pricing."
Brent W., Sunnyslope, Salem
"Full pre-listing punch list in one visit. Doors, trim, two fixtures, a leaky outdoor faucet and a fence picket. Clean photos and a written summary for the buyer. Easy."

Q+A and tips

The Salem Q&A Notebook.

We do a lot of work in Salem, and the same handful of questions come up almost every visit. Here's the notebook version, the answers we'd give a neighbor over coffee before we ever picked up a tool.

"My old window won't slide. What do I do?"

Don't force it. Score the paint line with a sharp utility blade, then work a putty knife around the sash slowly. Twenty minutes of patience almost always frees it without cracking the glass. If the sash cord broke and the window crashes down, leave it for us. We'll re-rig the weights so the window holds open like it's supposed to.

Ready when you are

Got a list? Let's knock it out.

Text a few photos of what's broken and you'll usually have a per-item ballpark back the same day. Salem visits typically slot in within the week.

Good questions

Salem FAQ.

Which parts of Salem do you cover?
Most of north and east Salem comes easiest for us out of Mulino. Keizer-adjacent neighborhoods, Lansing, Englewood, NE Salem, Hollywood, Sunnyslope, and the older blocks near Bush's Pasture Park. We get over to South Salem and West Salem too, just with a little more notice. If you're way out past Polk County we'll likely point you to someone closer.
Our 1940s Englewood bungalow has a sticky old double-hung window. Quick tip?
Don't force it, you'll crack the glass or rip the sash cord. Score the paint line around the sash with a sharp utility blade, then work a putty knife along the seam slowly. Most of the time twenty minutes of patience frees it. If yours has a broken sash cord, leave that for us. We'll free the window, lube the channels, and re-rig the weights so it actually slides next time.
Tips for the long Sunnyslope and South Salem fences?
Three things. Set posts in fast-set concrete with a slight crown so water sheds off the top. Add a tension cable across runs longer than thirty feet so the wind doesn't pull the panel like a sail. And re-screw any picket that lifts before winter, because once it warps it's done. Salem winters punish fences that didn't get a fall walk.
What's the smart fall checklist for an NE Salem house?
In this order: gutters and downspout splash blocks, exterior caulk at every penetration, weather strip on doors that have gone flat, outdoor faucets for drips, deck railing connections, crawl-space vent screens, and the door sweeps on the side and back doors that everybody forgets. Most of those are five-minute fixes if you catch them in October.
Can you do quick turnovers on Keizer-area rentals?
Yes, this is common work for us. Smoke and CO detectors, door latches, weather strip, blind brackets, leaky angle stops, wobbly toilets, fixture swaps, drywall patches. One visit, written summary with photos for the owner or property manager. Same approach we use for landlords in Canby and Oregon City.
Tip for the south-facing exterior caulk that always cracks?
Pull all of it and start over. Patching cracked caulk almost never holds. Cut the old bead out clean, prime the gap on bare wood, lay a fresh bead of paintable exterior caulk with a tool slick across it, and paint within a few days. South sun cooks the joint twice as hard as north exposure, so it pays to use the better grade of caulk on those walls.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. The Dandy Handyman is licensed, bonded and insured in Oregon, CCB #253174. Happy to email proof to your HOA, landlord, property manager or buyer before the first visit.
How fast can you get to a Salem address?
Most weeks we can be in Salem within three or four days. We batch Salem with Mount Angel and Silverton runs to keep the drive efficient. Smaller fixes sometimes slot in faster if a Mulino, Molalla or Canby job finishes early.
Is the $150 minimum worth it for a small Salem repair?
Only if you bundle. For one wobbly fixture by itself, you're mostly paying for the drive from Mulino. Save up a list of three or four items, including the stuff you've been ignoring, and the per-item math works out fine. Most Salem clients use us that way.
